DRESS YOUR BEST

Mixed media | Acrylic paint wood shelf | 2005 | 9-3/8” x 38” | $500
In Dress Your Best, I invite you to think about how we present ourselves—how we shape, layer, and sometimes hide parts of who we are. The piece is created from bits of patterned paper, snippets of advertising, fabric, and paint, each telling a story of what we choose to show or keep private.
Set against a changing blue sky, you'll see structures forming—like a cityscape, like a wardrobe—stitched together in fun and unexpected ways. A zipper opens up to reveal a delicate lace doily, resembling a flower or a burst of light, hinting at a softness and vulnerability beneath. Fragmented faces with glimpses of eyes peek through layers, suggesting stories are hiding just below the surface. Bright pops of red, teal, mustard, and magenta stand out against more muted tones—like bold choices in a sea of safe options.
This artwork is playful yet thoughtful—an abstract scene where memory, fashion, and identity come together. It’s about the moments when we shine in our brightest colors, the patchwork of influences that shape who we are, and finding beauty in being perfectly imperfect and a little undone.
